So, I’ve officially made it through my sophomore year at NC State and I’m ready to begin another summer adventure.
After my summer in Oklahoma last year, I decided that I wanted to venture out into the world again. Of all the places I could have gone, I decided on Omaha, Nebraska—I’m not quite sure what I’ve gotten myself into again, but I am very excited nonetheless.
I have a pretty sweet internship with Mosaic Community Development working on their public/community relations and then I will be volunteering with Justice For Our Neighbors.
Initially, I wasn’t quite sure if I was actually going to be able to go out to Omaha, but everything has worked out perfectly–so, I’m taking it as a sign that it’s meant to be.
Immigration law is something that really fascinates me–so, that’s where I began the whole process of selecting a city. One of my friends from the internship program I participated in last year worked at the Justice For Our Neighbors in DC. After hearing her stories, I knew I wanted to volunteer with them this summer. So, I looked through the list of cities for JFON and settled on Omaha.
After I decided I’d be going to Omaha, I began to look for other internship opportunities. One of the first places I looked at was Mosaic Community Development. I read through their website and it sounded like a great place to. So, I sent out an e-mail and after a lot of correspondence, I got an amazing internship!!
My biggest obstacle, however, was housing. My back up plan was to sublease an apartment or do a room for rent from craigslist. I knew that probably wasn’t the best way to go, but if I was desperate for a place then I would have definitely done that. I actually met a couple of people from Omaha this past summer when I was in Oklahoma though. So, I sent an e-mail to Nan, the pastor of Trinity UMC in Ralston, asking if she had any suggestions and she connected me with Liz, who is letting me stay in her spare bedroom at her apartment (for free!!!). I knew Liz from this past summer too!
While I would love to be flying to Omaha, I need my car this summer. So, I’m driving. I’m not exactly sure how this trek across half of the United States will go, but hopefully it won’t be too painful. I’m breaking up the trip and staying with a friend in Memphis–so, I don’t think it’ll be that bad.
Anyway, I must press on and continue packing–so, I will leave you with this information for now, but my journey begins THIS FRIDAY!! I promise to update this blog with tons of pictures and information. So, I hope you enjoy it!!
